Public Diplomacy has been defined as a complex effort "to influence public attitudes on the formation and execution of foreign policies."* Many countries around the world wish to strengthen their image in order to expand diplomatic and trade relations over the long-term. Some have resorted to public diplomacy by state institutions to influence public opintion abroad and to improve the way they are perceived. Yet formal state public diplomacy is often not enough.
Diplomacy International assists governments in their mission to improve their image among foreign countries. As a neutral, non-governmental actor, our actions are less constrained by the current state of country relations and formal protocol requirements. This can be advantageous in foreign countries where biased information and / or a false understanding of information have contributed to widespread, unfavourable perceptions of a certain nation-state. It is difficult in such circumstances for the state to influence external public opinion in the way desired.
By using our networks among the foreign press, organising public discussions and reaching out to students in schools and universities, we aim to correct misperceptions and present a more balanced view of our client country. Over time we endeavour to establish a dialogue with foreign publics and in the process create a better environment for expanded diplomatic and trade relations.
